Where to Get Essential Oils in Edmonton.

Essential oils are a necessary component of any holistic-minded person's health cupboard and have been increasing in popularity as more and more research emerges about their diverse benefits. It seems that most people know about the indications for tea tree, peppermint, and lavender -being the most mainstream of the essential oils- but there are literally hundreds of botanicals that offer a myriad of healing properties for almost every symptom you can think of: antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral, circulation, memory, depression, anxiety, insomnia and so forth.

Most healing health protocols that include supplementation or herbal remedies can be buttressed with the addition of essential oils in some way. As such, it was a natural step for Optimum Health Vitamins to open a specialized department devoted to aromatherapy as a greater extension of what we do at Kolya Naturals Apothecary.

At our store, we take great care and pride in hand-picking every brand of essential oil to insure that you have the quality and prices that you need. When you visit us, you'll find scentful oils from Scents of Wonder, the Aromatherapist and our in-house medical grade label, Earth's Aromatique.

Some of the key things to consider when purchasing essential oils are:

Purity – Make sure you seek actual essential oils. Many products in the industry are called 'fragrance oil' or 'perfume oil', and these usually indicate that the oil is either synthetic or adulterated in some form with chemicals. Real essential oils are labelled as such and, by definition, are composed only of highly concentrated plant constituents possessing potent medicinal and cosmetic qualities. Even better are organic essential oils because they lack pesticides and herbicides which have been concentrated in this medicinal form. Make sure you get certified brands to ensure quality control.

Containers – Be cautious about vendors who sell their essential oils in clear glass, plastic or aluminum containers as these don't preserve the integrity and medicinal properties of the oil.
Most reputable vendors will sell their oils in dark, coloured glass bottles to keep out the sun and any degrading light.

Price- A lot of companies will sell their essential oils all at the same price. This doesn't make a lot of sense as precious essential oils such as rose, jasmine and neroli require a significant amount of raw product in oil production and since these flowers are more expensive than say, peppermint, the final concentrated end-product of their essential oil will naturally be more expensive also. If someone is selling lavender and rose for the same price, you can assume that one or the other has been cheapened or diluted in some form.

The top ten oils, that most people have in their medicine cabinets from the get-go are as follows.

  • Lavender
  • Tea tree
  • Chamomile
  • Geranium
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary
  • Lemon
  • Frankincense
  • Peppermint
  • Rose

At Kolya and Optimum Health, you won't just be alone with our oils though! We recognize that negotiating a shelf full of hundreds of tiny bottles, each with their own potent medicinal purposes, can be a highly daunting task. As such, we employ trained and certified professionals to assist you with your holistic and aromatherapy needs. Ask any of our qualified consultants to assist you or take one of our house workshops to find out which oils are right for you.
